Simply 6-Minutes 5/2/2023-A Time Extraordinaire

Swing dancing in the 1940s

A Time Extraordinaire

Ralph and Ruth had been married for almost 70 years. When Ruth came across a photo of them swing dancing as a young couple, they joined hands and bowed their heads.
The night before the couple had reminisced about those ‘classier’ times.
They agreed that architecture, clothing, and dance were works of art in ‘their day’ and that the ‘modern’ world was growing increasingly ugly reflecting the moral decay in a society once vibrant and hopeful.
A tear rolled down Ruth’s cheek at so much loss they had witnessed but Ralph, in his own beautiful fashion, tickled her behind the ear and turned on the Turner Classic Movie Channel. Their hearts soared watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as Ralph sang along softly in Ruth’s ear.

Simply 6-Minutes 3/7/23 Evil Cloaks Itself in Beauty

In only 6 minutes we must use the image below to inspire a story.

Son: ” Dad, we’re doing a new unit about ‘serial killers’ at school. I was surprised that Ted Bundy didn’t look at all like a ‘monster’.”

Dad: “That’s the same revelation that I had when I first saw him in the news. That observation opened my eyes to ‘how evil works’ in our world. It, more often than not, appeals to people’s ‘better natures’ and cons them into doing its bidding. Far more harm and destruction has come from people convinced that they were doing something ‘noble’ and ‘good’ than ugly barbarians. An interruption to common sense and logic comes ‘gift wrapped’ in a pretty promise that people may have an opportunity to ‘show off’ their virtuousness. Bundy was good looking and likeable, so he wasn’t easily suspected of “evil” which gave him more opportunities to use it.

Son: OMG…That sounds like the same way people pick which politicians they vote for!

Ronovan Writes SIJO Wednesday 2/1/23- Delicious are Dreamers

Use ESCAPE as your inspiration this week.

You should use the word in the title of this post as your inspiration as either a theme of the Sijo or in the poem itself.

There are:

  • Three Lines
  • 14-16 syllables per line
  • A total of 44-46 syllables for the entire poem.

    Delicious are Dreamers

Hide your mind from topics too cruel for your delicate hearts,
And discount ugliness for a safe escape to enchantment.
For tender ‘dreamers’ make the most delicious dish of tyrants.

For our souls…

My husband and I had many differences. One centered on our music preferences.

As an ex-naval man, he’d had a few unfortunate instances where black friends felt the need to abandon friendship (his and theirs), in favor of, their racial affiliations. He was hurt by this, and therefore, felt discrimination of a different kind. He talked of having really wonderful “buddies” who acted as if he were an “enemy” when grouped with “their kind”. You know, I don’t think he ever had a prejudiced inclination until this occurred.

Well, my affinity for Motown, didn’t make him happy. My goodness, R&B is awesome and sensual. I’d never considered it a racial statement but dang good music.

He aged and mellowed, a bit, before I put my foot down. I loved R&B and his unfortunate experiences, had nothing to do with whether I could continue to love it.

This post is for anyone, black or white, who has felt the “heat” and ugliness of racism. Grow-up! Rise above the hurt and embrace our humanity. We can only adjust our own attitudes, but that’s a great start.

The Confederate Flag was not all about anti-black sentiment and Motown is, truly, all about soul…. Not black soul or white soul. The human soul.
