E.M.’s Sunday Ramble Prompt #21

Here are the questions:

  1. What is at least one thing that makes you happy today?
  2. What is one thing that happened last week that made you feel positive and happy?
  3. What is your positive personal mantra? (Mantra means “a statement or slogan repeated frequently” via Oxford Dictionary.)
  4. What is the nicest act you secretly did for someone?
  5. What is one hobby you would like to try?
  6. Bonus Question: What is your go-to song to belt out in the shower?

    1. It’s Springtime. What’s not to feel happy about? My flowering quince is taking on a hue of “pinkness” signaling that an explosion of blooms is imminent.

    2. My granddaughter (age 9) and I have been writing a children’s story together. We’ve kept a journal that describes our characters, explains our story line, and keeps our notes as they pop into our heads. It’s been on and off with many of our imaginings taking place as we wait for the school bus. Last week was Spring vacation so we had a whole afternoon to work. I sketched our characters as we had imagined them, and she added some of her own touches, as well as, outline and color. It was one of those productive days that you don’t want to end. Her excitement was the most delightful part! Things are coming together. Her dedication to the project is heartwarming and she now realizes the work that goes into a creative project. We are ‘making memories’ and building skills.

3. My personal positive mantra is: “Yes we can!”

4. I can’t even begin to recall the nicest act that I’ve ‘secretly’ done for someone because I truly don’t remember. I don’t keep score or hang on to those things. They are “seeds” offered to hopefully ‘take root’. I would have to answer, “Whatever my next one is…”.

5. I’ve tried a lot of hobbies and jump from one thing to the other. I’d like to revisit turning clay pots on an old-fashioned potter’s wheel. That was fun! I haven’t done that for 48 years.

6. I never sing in the shower. Ha! Probably because I’m inclined to sing and dance throughout the day. My cellphone ringtone is Come and Get Your Love by Redbone. That song grabs me. I love breaking into to song when it goes off. Spam calls don’t bother me because I’m dancing and ignoring them all at once! LOL

d’Verse Haibun Monday- 3-28-22 Cherry Blossoms

New to haibun? The form consists of one to a few paragraphs of prose—usually written in the present tense—that evoke an experience and are often non-fictional/autobiographical. They may be preceded or followed by one or more haiku—nature-based, using a seasonal image—that complement without directly repeating what the prose stated.

Cherry trees struggle around my New England home as dynamic weather fronts roll in and out. Last week, we enjoyed 70 degrees F and today a bitter wind blows arctic temperatures around. A ‘wicked’ development according to local slang. So, to those plants and people not yet acclimated to our “on again, off again” ‘teasery’, there’s a danger of overcommitment and casual disregard for “what ifs”. A ‘shock and awe’ challenge to their comfortable existence often arises to their peril. Only the steady and sturdy can prevail in such uncertain weather. People would be wise to claim those same attributes in our uncertain world.

Weekly Smile 3/21/22

Happy Spring!
This Sillyfrog thinks Spring is the BEST season. Wood frogs are among my favorite ‘cousins’ and this last weekend there was rain and warmth inspiring a big night of migration for these fascinating creatures.

Wood frogs (above) live on the forest floor and freeze solid during the winter! They can be found as far North as the Arctic Circle. Their window for mating is quite small and can be observed for about a week. This makes their ‘coming out party’ a big event on my calendar!
Salamanders (below) follow a similar pattern that coincides with their amphibian cousins. They don’t make a loud chorus so you may be unaware that they’re around.

I made my own cute informational video several years ago but couldn’t locate it for this post. This video was made 2 years ago not too far from where I live. Listen for the frogs’ noisy celebration of Spring.
I’m stoked for more springtime magic. I’ll keep you posted. ❤

Haibun Monday – d’Verse Poets Pub

019

The Spring season’s chilled breath holds back the inevitable procession toward summer. I button my over shirt until the sun makes its intention known and coaxes me to strip that layer. Even the robin fluffs itself as it bops in the thickening grasses rewarded with tender newly awakened worms. This moment of ‘just right’ fills me. I wouldn’t mind elongating this period to put off the advent of dog days.

Green is my season
Relishing the temperate
Sublime revival

The Weekly Smile- 3/29/21

weeklysmile2b

On another Weekly Smile post, I talked about Northern Cardinal songs signaling the approach of Springtime. But Spring doesn’t start, officially, until the songs of spring peepers are heard in the night. Two days ago, I heard them for the first time in 2021.
IT’S OFFICIAL NOW. THEY ARE FROGS.
You had to guess that this frog lover is smiling!
The first video showcases that delightful sound.
The second is a short tutorial on Spring Peepers. Enjoy!

Weekly Smile ~ 3/1/21

The cardinals are singing their Spring song!
Actually, the males are advertising for mates. I wait for this event every winter.
Usually, it happens between Jan. 25 and Feb. 10. It may have happened this year during that time but I hadn’t heard it until last week.
I was likely inside during an inclement spell during that time OR they decided to ‘get busy’ only under a weather permitting time table.
Anyway, last week was my first notice of the cardinals of 2021.
Our first harbinger of Springtime has arrived.
Birds make me smile throughout the year but this event gets a GREAT BIG SMILE!

Camping Notes 5/6/13

I realized that on Mondays, I am usually overflowing with camp observations. Thought I’d share some, now and then.

It was the first gorgeous weekend of the 2013 season. Temperatures that I would happily keep year round, 70s, by day, and upper 40s, by night.

022

To the right, is our original site which my husband, Ed, had cleared and built. The whole area was thick forest when we began over 15 years ago. This is Ellen and Kory’s place now. (They weren’t here this weekend.)

We have a small Walmart sunken pond which is my first stop every weekend. It provides a wonderful vernal pool for amphibians. The visitors are fewer,so far, and  I have a good theory as to, why?

047

010It has been recently dry and the spotted salamanders and wood frogs migrate farther during rainy weather. Only the green frog “locals” and one mature Red Spotted Newt are currently present. This is a first for my pond. This week promises some rain but I’m afraid that their egg laying, for this year, might be over. 😦

So off to check out my plum blossoms. Last year, I was alarmed by how few honeybees had tended to pollination. This year, I spotted a few but the numbers are still dismal compared to years past. I’m hoping that our chilly Spring has not yet awakened the masses.

As the day progresses, I plan my garden. We have suffered for 4 years with a terrible fungus blight. This year, I plan to grow corn and I’ll be trying an above ground method for tomatoes using wooden skids.

045

Ollie, my Jack Russell, is the happiest camper. He’s able to run loose and dig to his heart’s content. He is now 9 years old and requires more breaks in the sun. Of course, he has his own chair.

038057

Ed and I camp in an area that he prepared for our 5th-wheel. It is just below the old homestead and is our little piece of heaven.

062

Ed keeps very busy. He gathers wood and splits it, as well as, maintaining the lawns and building wonderful stone flowerbeds. His four-wheeler has all that he needs. Yes, a rifle and a chainsaw are both necessary here. Actually, Ed had arrived the day before I came. Our gas grill had been knocked from our deck and one (empty) cooler was out in our yard. Our friends, with a game camera, have evidence of a large black bear in our area. Coyotes and a fisher have also been spotted. We leave no food or garbage out to entice them!

055

I was pleased to see the first of Ellen’s tulips open. The daylight hours are shorter in the woods, so our campsite is a bit behind what we have at home.

067

I was also happy to see some forget-me-not seeds had taken where I’d hoped they would fill in on a banking.

018

I never fail to search our piece stone before we leave. It was quarried in Hudson, NY and has many seashell fossils from a time when New York was an ocean floor. I have always loved rocks! I’m thrilled to look for fossils and, sad that so many were ground up, too. I guess I would have never had the chance to find them if that had not happened.

064

So there you have a glimpse of the “good life” I find in the forest. I also had time to read in a lovely shaded area beside my dog.

Further updates will show my flower beds and garden. See you later!
