RDP Tuesday- 4/18/23-Nothing Works Like a Promise

The Ragtag Daily Prompt for today is nothing.

Nothing invigorates me like a good discussion. Today did not disappoint.
It evolved into “What is capitalism?” and whether it still existed.
Like the definition of “What is a woman?”, the definition of “What is capitalism?” is quite simple. Only those ‘schooled’ to conflate it with all the waste and power that’s unabated at the present time, seem to have a hard time.
Capitalism aka Free Markets can be very simply defined.
It is a marketing philosophy that’s dependent upon consumer power and preferences and accountable to the will of the people.
My claim that it no longer exists because of government control of, and interference with, free markets was not received well by a fellow blogger who thought that being wealthy from personal risk and innovation was unethical.

It was just revealed to me that she’s a “socialist”.
Well, that explains a lot.
She believes ‘humanity’ belongs to, and is supported by, unaccountable powerful people who use the wealth that others have earned to bring a ‘promise’ to the masses. I’ve heard that story before.
Never mind.

SoCS 2/18/23 I Promise

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “starts with pro.” Find a word that starts with “pro” and use it any way you like in your post. Enjoy!

Once this prompt was posted and my brain grabbed the word “promise” ‘out of thin air’, there was no waiting for posting this tomorrow. {I’m going to have to try to wait for Saturday before I look next time. LOL}

My first thought concerning promises was how frequently people assume they can impose expo facto promises on others.
You know the type. Someone tells you a piece of gossip that you didn’t ask for then says, “But don’t tell anyone you heard that from me.”.
What the heck? I can’t and won’t promise because I don’t know what that unsolicited information may do. If someone is in danger. or if someone seems to need help, I’m going to do what my conscience tells me is best. Luckily, some people at least give you a warning by saying that last part first. To that, I usually say I don’t want to know, and until I know, I won’t promise anything.

Then I looked up words of wisdom from The Andy Griffith Show on ‘promises’. (IMHO…That show held wisdom and character like no other.)
I posted the cute (wholesome) excerpt below.
I must tell you that I had mixed feelings about what Andy told Opie at first. His advice seemed to be contradictory by praising loyalty to a parent while telling Opie that promises should always be kept.
We don’t want our kids ever to feel they can’t tell their parents anything even if a promise is made. Certainly, adults realize there are many good reasons to break promises. That’s a really good reason that they shouldn’t be made too frequently or without a lot of thought beforehand.

But as I thought about this clip, I ended up agreeing with Andy’s advice. Here’s why:

Kids that young are not capable of prioritizing things and recognizing nuances. Andy was laying an early foundation of character-building behavior. Everything he said was a fundamental lesson that Opie needed to hear. It wouldn’t be long before further talks could add the exceptions to those fundamental “goods” when Opie would be old enough to grasp them. Building character comes from the laying of a solid foundation. Having character, is what helps a person make virtuous nuanced decisions later on.

At least that’s how I see it.
Happy Saturday Friends!

d’Verse Haibun Monday- 1-2-23- Birth

This week, I would like you to write about your feelings towards this New Year and/or what you do in the first few days of January. Aim to write no more than three short, tight paragraphs, followed by a traditional haiku that includes reference to the season.
——————————————————-

On New Year’s Day we celebrated my firstborn’s 43rd birthday. She was the New Year’s baby in our area in 1980. What a fine distraction I have had since that wonderous day! The traditional drumbeat of regrets and fearful anticipation that seems to permeate New Year’s Day had always made it my least favorite holiday. A perfect baby girl changed my whole outlook, and, for that, I am eternally grateful.
Any baby’s birth holds endless promise and possibilities and encompasses the true meaning of a beginning. Now, I choose to turn inward embracing gratitude all through the dark cold month of January not the least bit concerned with future ‘what ifs.’. This identical spirit to Christmas continues warming me all through the winter months.

January first
A perfect message of hope
Comes from your own heart

Taking Pause

seeds 112#1In Autumn, the forest does not die

But folds her arms tightly

Embracing a fine satisfaction.

Reflections are brightest then.

When color flashes and fades

In one instant of hurrah.
No regrets.

Life becomes life,

Passing knowledge in subtle shades of gold.

One great pause

To emphasize what matters most.

Timing is everything.
No regrets.

Shining days of resurrection.

A whispered promise

On a chilling wind.

Awkward seedlings will persevere

Built upon your rituals,
your wisdom,
no regrets.

For my granddaughters.

A Peanut Butter Promise

There’s a very special flavor

Of the easiest kind of chore.

My family used it on the day

We bought him at the store.

Our puppy was the wiggle kind

We named him Barney Fife.

 Made a peanut butter promise

To keep him safe for life.

Peanut butter really sticks

And so did all our deeds.

We made a pact for good or bad,

To meet our Barney’s needs.

I’ve heard about the “comes” and “goes”

Of pets who fall from grace.

Messy feet and doggie hair

or chewing up the place.

Whatever happens, I’ll stand tall

And love him ever more.

‘Cuz we made a peanut butter promise

When we bought him at the store.

What’s eating me up?

It is very upsetting to me that I have lost so much faith in law makers, police officers and our courts.

Am I a victim of propaganda or a person who knows a corrupt reality?

I realize that our current media is much more efficient in showing and interested in the “bad” things that happen. Bad stuff has always gone on.

Greed will never be erased. Injustices make justice more precious.

Where can a person go to find answers rather than more questions?

I love our country deeply. Yes, our Star Spangled Banner gives me goosebumps. From where I sit, money or the lack of it, decides justice in our courts more often than values. The courts are deciding legislative matters, the people vote on referendums and are ignored. The rules for police officers and “big shots” are not the same as for the greater majority.

I do not think we should accept arguments about race or national origin. The REAL deal is about wealth and the power which comes from it.

I’m tired of the blame game. Tired of the every thing “has to be fair” argument. Mostly, the mistrust I have in our government is wearing me out. It is changing me…I want to believe in the goodness of folks. I want to believe that voters have intelligent arguments and reasons for their votes. I want to believe that our media hasn’t an agenda of its own.

BUT I DON’T.

Please convince me that I have nothing to fear.
