Stream of Consciousness Saturday 2-25-23 Love’s a Gift but Peace is a Prize

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “prize.” Use it as a noun or a verb; use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

To me, the ultimate ‘prize‘ is ‘peace’.
Some might say it should be ‘love’ and not ‘peace’.
Since I believe the ability to ‘love’ comes from God, I ‘see’ that as a precious ‘gift’ not a ‘prize’. But peace is not guaranteed in our world. The feeling of peace can happen when we least expect it. Some who are overwhelmed with troubles would likely even notice moments of peace more readily than those of us who have come to expect it in our everyday lives.
I believe animals not only offer us moments of warmth, but they actually are more in-touch with peace. Peace is the absence (however brief) of their struggles for survival. It can present itself in moments of safety or, in the case of domesticated animals, as an impression of a life in safe surroundings.
IMHO…Peace is often overlooked and under appreciated by human beings until we lose it. (Not unlike freedom.)
I prize peace more than all other things.

Happy Saturday everyone! May peace be with you today.

The Sunday Muse # 245- 2/5/23 Rest in Peace

We are asked to find inspiration from an assortment of images. This is the one that I chose. It wasn’t clearly labeled to offer its creator credit. I apologize for that.

Heroes seek less for themselves than for ‘Good’,
But those courageous ones still long for peace.
The most daring hearts chase the “What should?”
Heroes seek less for themselves than for ‘Good’.
They won’t flinch as weaker souls would.
Where might we be if they ever cease?
Heroes seek less for themselves than for ‘Good’,
But those courageous ones still long for peace.

Weekend Writing Prompt #297- No Key Necessary

The days had dragged on for those witnessing his final throes of life.
As one moment led to the next, a bright light widened in his peripheral vision.
A clock ticked as his body relaxed in the natural way of acceptance and peace.
He’d done well… no regrets necessary… rest was about to be his reward.
The key to life had never been what he’d imagined.
Everything now made perfect sense.

d’Verse Prosery: When it comes to Katherine Riegel- Beyond Balance

Here’s how to take part in the Prosery Prompt:

  • Including the given line from the poem.
  • Post your Prosery piece on your blog and link back to this post.

This evening I would like you to write a Prose piece which includes the line:

“I’d like, too, to plant the sweet alyssum that smells like honey and peace.” from the poem, “What I would like to grow in my Garden.”

“Total all-encompassing darkness even though the midday sun burns my face!”

Brian paused as he processed those opposing disorienting sensations.
But as he crossed his legs and sat, he could smell the rich microbial communities in his newly tilled garden soil and felt balance return.

The wartime sacrifice of his sight wasn’t going to rob him of living fully. At that moment, he realized perhaps more fully than he’d ever known.

His father had dug a donut-shape and seated Brian on sod in the center with a trowel and 2 pre-selected seed packages.

Brian wanted sturdy sunflowers so their growth could be witnessed by his flesh as cool shadows, yet his fingertips would not bend them.

His other request was for aroma.

His Dad shed silent tears when Brian proclaimed, “I’d like, too, to plant the sweet alyssum that smells like honey and peace.”

Hope Makes Everything Possible

Try as she may, Hope’s mother gave up years ago on talking her daughter out of a long daily ritual of waiting for the mail. Hope’s autism was most severe and the quiet time, she spent daily waiting, had become a mixed blessing. Her mother had come to count on a few hours of ‘ME’ time to care for herself, and she needed that. So, all was well.

There had been an offer for a free poster of Hope’s favorite TV characters in a magazine ad, so Mama had long ago sent for it. Hope was 7 at the time. She kept the ordering page neatly folded reverently on her dresser ever since, but Hope was now still waiting 15 years later. The T.V. show had even gone into syndication 10 years ago, but Hope got to watch the Rugrats on demand anyway. Time just wasn’t moving in her world.

Well, Mama brought Hope her lunch- on one grey day- and a ring at the door, signaling the mail, went off. The young woman almost upset her plate as she raced downstairs with the exact same daily enthusiasm she’d maintained ever since childhood.
Mama braced herself for the usual sullen daughter dragging up the stairway in disappointed when Hope ran into the room squealing! She was holding a long tube above her head.
There it was! That long-awaited prize that Mama was certain would never come. They opened it together and immediately hung it on her bedroom wall. Hope danced with happiness too excited to even eat her lunch.
Mama’s heart nearly burst with joy watching her daughter’s celebration even though she was absolutely baffled by the long-delayed wish coming true. “What the heck?”, Mama thought.

The next day, Hope anxiously paced all around rubbing her hands since her routine vigil had been ended, so Mama thought quickly and ordered another poster from the same ancient careworn magazine page. It worked!
Her daughter started a brand-new vigil. And, with a name like Hope, she’d be waiting for as long as it takes. All was well once again.

Eugi’s Weekly Prompt- A Thing Called Peace

The old soldier looked out of the hospital window watching the world, in all its brilliant color, moving along. He’d done many things he regretted having to do and, even though he’d do most of them all over again, his heart could not find peace. He wasn’t even sure that peace was really a ‘thing’.
His nightmares, and night terrors, were infrequent now but the flashbacks were sharp and persistent. His doctor blamed them on his end-of-life, heavy, medication. For what it mattered, he understood that his personal journey was drawing to a close. He prayed that all his uncertainty, and self-doubt, would soon fade into oblivion.
Abruptly, a hand on his shoulder made him jump! When he turned, there stood his father just as he remembered him, in his working overalls- he even had his trademark ‘five o’clock shadow’- looking down at him. Chester braced himself for a shaming lecture. His father had been a stern, somewhat cold man, who had always demanded the BEST from his son.
Instead, he watched his father’s steel gray eyes soften.
“Son, I’m proud of you. I’m sorry ’bout leaning on you so hard. But, I loved you too much not to prepare you for harshness that life was sure to offer. I can’t rest until you forgive me.”
Chester lurched to grab his father’s hand, in both of his, when he began to feel weightless.
He shouted, ” You did your best. I’ll always love you. You’re forgiven!” and his father disappeared.
Alarms started to ping and Chester watched several nurses rush to his bedside.
Then a bright light enveloped him and he heard his own words repeated in a most comforting, yet commanding, voice.
“You did your best. I’ll always love you. You’re forgiven.”

Chester found out, in THAT moment, Peace was most definitely, ‘a thing’.
