Bloody Hope

The bloody battle suddenly paused because of an unusual mid-April blizzard.
A tempest of icy crystals obscured visibility to a few feet as the under clothed soldiers huddled in small groups.
Jimmy’s tour-of-duty was due to end in thirteen days but his gut was warning him otherwise.
He felt compelled to scratch a short letter to his mother with numb fingertips and place it in his pocket.

Dear Mother,
We’ve been in a most bitter fight today.
Victory will be ours as soon as a brutal snowstorm lifts and offers my company its due.
Our resolve is solid and my discharge is imminent yet I wanted to let you know my heart is already home.
I am not afraid and I love you.
For how can I be sure I shall see again the world on the first of May?
Your loving son,
James

Random Word Story #19~A Mother’s Touch

My words today are:

puppet…committee…inn…farm…tie…chimp

Here’s my story:

A gimmick is all that it took these days. Dolly was running her own campaign. She was determined to become the first female president of the United States. If anyone proposed that her name was too cutie-pie, she was prepared to remind folks of the famed first lady Dolley Madison.

Dolly was starting her journey by embracing her differences and defining herself. Oh yes, her approach was sexist. A chimp in a suit coat, tie and diaper, adorned her poster with the slogan,” Time for a change?”

Heck, the men would laugh and the women could identify and the animal lovers? Well, they were also included.

As a stand-up comic, Dolly knew that comic relief was what her beloved country sorely needed. Comedy was the most powerful, feel-good unifying force. She was tired of the bickering and half-truths. Dolly knew that you could say anything if it was funny. Time that the populace learned to laugh at themselves and move on.

Hmmmm…How could she work the idea of a movement into the diaper theme? Aw crap…she’d think of something. HA!

Her committee of followers had set up her first press conference at a New England inn. She had decided to wear clothing in only shades of purple. Red,White and Blue were combined and so, too ,the whole nation would become with her leadership.

Of course, the date chosen for her debut was Mother’s day. It was her hope to have mothers unite on her behalf. No more “smoke and mirrors”. She was no one’s puppet either. Just a mom who could do better than those chest-thumping boobs have done.

Dolly chuckled when she delighted, once again, in the image of the chimp AND that diaper. As long as she tapped into the frustration of average Americans, her agenda of improvement would carry the day.

As she prepared to take the microphone, Dolly looked from the podium out over the orchards on that farm. The trees were ancient and yet still orderly and fruitful. Her eyes filled with tears, just for a moment. She was going to remind herself of the orchard throughout the business of campaigning. Old yet orderly and fruitful…how she loved her country. A mother’s agenda is selfless . Her mission to create self-sufficient citizens is universal. Her love cannot be compromised.

She began her speech. ” I am a mother, a proud American and a woman. I’ve learned to diagnose illnesses, I am most capable of remembering moments and I know how to ask for directions. A mother is a child’s first hero and I want to be our country’s hero! Take my hand …”

Family Life ~ Big Sister

My granddaughter Katherine knows she’ll become a big sister right after her 7th birthday this September. Just last week, she found out that her new sibling will be a sister. This has all been exciting.

At 6 1/2, Katherine has been able to wrap her head around the idea and consider it more than if she were younger.

Last evening, she had a sensitive moment while contemplating the prospect of sharing her mother’s heart with anyone else. It was the first time that the BIG SISTER role was not entirely appealing to her. Luckily, Katherine shares her feelings freely. Her mother (my daughter) was able to discuss how there is plenty of room in all of our hearts for both girls.

Today Kat was as cheerful as ever. I had been too young to consider all those feelings when I became a big sister many years ago. So glad that Kat could share her emotions. Certainly, we all will be aware of those feelings when little Evelyn comes to town.

It is sure to be life changing for us all!

My Parents' Influence on My Personality

My personality favors my mother’s the most.

My intellectual curiosity and passion for new ideas is the gift I received from my mom. We recently had an opportunity to share the excitement we have for projects. Although I am considered the “creative” family member, Mom is a true creative person as well and applies her creativity differently but no less effectively.

I am a political animal which comes from Mom too. My husband has a bit to do with the level of my interest though.

Mom, my sister and I share a deep connection with our pets and a fondness for the English language and it’s proper application.

Whenever I have a question and my reaction is,”I must look that up.”, it’s from my mother’s inspired thirst for knowledge.

Her commitment to family and civil responsibilities is the cornerstone for the three “good citizens” that she raised. All of her 3 children have stayed in and been productive members of their hometown.

Mom read to us at early ages and brought us to the library. Family stories were very important to her father and she passed on, that love for a really good story, to me.

The fact that I consider myself a writer is her doing…thanks Mom!
