Weekly Smile 1/30/23- It’s Snowing!

We got some snow last week. I know that many people are inconvenienced by measurable snowfall, but I love it!
It’s pretty, and most importantly to me, it makes all the insane “git ‘er done!” bustling slow to a crawl.
Schedules are temporarily suspended.
Either I was born one hundred years too late or I’m just a ‘stop and smell the roses’ type, but the pace of living often dismays me.
That’s no doubt why escaping to the woods regenerates me.

I’m hoping Mother Nature will offer me a few snowier pauses this year. She’s been taking her own breaks from bringing winter on fully. Hey… she’s no ‘spring chicken’ perhaps she needs to pause too!

E.M.’s Sunday Ramble Prompt #21

Here are the questions:

  1. What is at least one thing that makes you happy today?
  2. What is one thing that happened last week that made you feel positive and happy?
  3. What is your positive personal mantra? (Mantra means “a statement or slogan repeated frequently” via Oxford Dictionary.)
  4. What is the nicest act you secretly did for someone?
  5. What is one hobby you would like to try?
  6. Bonus Question: What is your go-to song to belt out in the shower?

    1. It’s Springtime. What’s not to feel happy about? My flowering quince is taking on a hue of “pinkness” signaling that an explosion of blooms is imminent.

    2. My granddaughter (age 9) and I have been writing a children’s story together. We’ve kept a journal that describes our characters, explains our story line, and keeps our notes as they pop into our heads. It’s been on and off with many of our imaginings taking place as we wait for the school bus. Last week was Spring vacation so we had a whole afternoon to work. I sketched our characters as we had imagined them, and she added some of her own touches, as well as, outline and color. It was one of those productive days that you don’t want to end. Her excitement was the most delightful part! Things are coming together. Her dedication to the project is heartwarming and she now realizes the work that goes into a creative project. We are ‘making memories’ and building skills.

3. My personal positive mantra is: “Yes we can!”

4. I can’t even begin to recall the nicest act that I’ve ‘secretly’ done for someone because I truly don’t remember. I don’t keep score or hang on to those things. They are “seeds” offered to hopefully ‘take root’. I would have to answer, “Whatever my next one is…”.

5. I’ve tried a lot of hobbies and jump from one thing to the other. I’d like to revisit turning clay pots on an old-fashioned potter’s wheel. That was fun! I haven’t done that for 48 years.

6. I never sing in the shower. Ha! Probably because I’m inclined to sing and dance throughout the day. My cellphone ringtone is Come and Get Your Love by Redbone. That song grabs me. I love breaking into to song when it goes off. Spam calls don’t bother me because I’m dancing and ignoring them all at once! LOL

Sweet Ending

I breathe deeply.

It’s been weeks since I’ve inhaled,

and felt alive.

The waning growing season

is less about endings, to me.

Stagnation and swelter

Have lifted.

It is far better to be busy.

Survival is an active process.

The depth of silent winter,

White and cozy,

Hasn’t any power to suppress

my spirit.

As the woolen, suffocating blanket of summer lifts,

I remember to be happy.

Jump Up

I want to jump

And not come down.

Floating way

Above the ground.

My sneakers staying

ever new.

With power packs for

Flying too.

I’d move my arms

Like when I swim.

 Won’t have to take

The bus again.

At my school

I’d be above,

All those lines

And every shove.

“Slam dunk” champ.

No skinned knees,

Saving kites

Caught up in trees.

 I’ll sleep on clouds

No lumpy bed.

The moon, my nightlight,

Overhead.

At supper time,

My Mom throws up,

A dinner plate,

My meal and cup.

Untie my shoes

And I’ll come down.

When I get lonesome

For the ground.

I’ll take my bath,

Pick up my clothes.

And get some mud

Between my toes.

I won’t stay long,

I love the air.

Most my time,

I’ll be up there.

NBGN

“To everything in life there must be a balance.”

I’m sure that everyone has heard that, in one form or another. I’ve also realized that if one listens to sad music too long, they get sadder. Even too much happy “Barney the Purple Dinosaur” music can keep us from considering the real ugly things that do exist. So with this in mind, I propose a Nothing But Good News channel. The NBGN would be a way to get away from what’s wrong with the world and a chance to rediscover what is right, kind and exceptional about humankind.

We should not replace the evening news BUT a little balance would be good for our spirits. I think the single biggest problem today is the feeling of doom and hopelessness. There are so very many great things going on. Our kids are not ALL spoiled, our country is not SO divided that we cannot come together and our hearts are not THAT bitter when we realize how generous we can be with our neighbors in need.

The advertising on that channel would prohibit:

  • Lawyers looking for lawsuits.
  • Doctors offering plastic surgery solutions and anti-aging products.
  • Any messages from specific religious or political groups.

The programming would have an interest in the positive natural human condition, how we are all alike, and anything that concerns family togetherness, healthy choices,  and sharing. Pointing out our differences would be positive and informative.

“All I needed to know, I learned in Kindergarten.”  Such a poignant statement.

Wouldn’t it be grand for kids to see more examples of our goodness, as a balance to , what frightens and angers us?  I know they are watching and listening.  Makes me cringe when I consider the kind of messages they must be receiving from the News channels alone.   It’s gotta be pretty scary for kids these days.  Hope we can find many ways to add more optimism to their view of the future world. I think a Good News channel would be a fine start.
