Five Word Weekly Challenge- Leaving Your Mark

Mark, who was appropriately named, was the ‘black sheep’ of the family. Every family has/needs one and like they say, if you can’t identify your own family’s ‘black sheep’, it’s probably you. Black sheep are not necessarily ‘bad’ but they do stand out against the ‘herd’.
Today is Thanksgiving and Mark is standing outside his family’s home, still wearing a bright orange jumpsuit, on a special furlough from prison. He’d toyed with various alternative outfits, but all would be hard to manage with the barrier of an ankle bracelet so, in his usual style, he decided to “keep it real” in order to lift the awkward fog over what everybody already knew.

Mark needed to pause a bit longer on the step to regain his composure from a fit of ‘the giggles’ after slipping on a homemade green hat with a pumpkin stem. He’d made up his mind that he wasn’t going to allow everyone to be sullen when he had the opportunity to make them laugh. His time left was 8 months for a crime he’d committed but wasn’t a bit sorry for. The “whys” differentiate “bad guys” from “good guys” all of the time.

Once Mama wrapped him in the tightest hug and wiped tears of joy from her cheek, he knew he was indeed Home. The family got a big laugh over his costume with many of them saying with a shrug, “Some things never change.” and “Leave it to Mark.”. It became the best day, and the food was amazing!

That evening he reluctantly went back to prison. Mark had made friends with most of the prison guards and staff, so proper prison protocols were frequently suspended just for him. As he re-entered the prison after the holiday furlough, he wore the green hat again prompting audible laughter from every guard tower.

Eight months wouldn’t be so bad a wait after all.

Six Sentence Story- Given the Chance

PROMPT WORD:  STRIKE

8:05 am- Daniel knew serious trouble was brewing on the crime ravaged side street and patted his holstered revolver beneath his shirt while speeding up to avoid the impending mayhem and get to work on time.

When he opened his eyes, he could see three EMTs frantically working on someone below him as he seemed suspended in midair.

The last thing he remembered was riding his bicycle along the city street and hearing a succession of fireworks? … no, gunshots!

A woman’s anguished scream drew his attention to a limp bloody baby being placed in tiny body bag while police formed a human perimeter holding back a gathering crowd.

He regretted immediately his reluctance to stop and attempt to protect the vulnerable innocent people who were caught unaware and unarmed, so he decided to strike a bargain and declared, “Lord, give me another chance to save that baby… I care not what happens to me but let me do what’s right!”.

8:06 am- Daniel knew serious trouble was brewing on the crime ravaged side street and patted his holstered revolver beneath his shirt while skidding his bicycle to a halt…

The empty bulletin board was the only thing that remained in the ‘violent crime’ detective unit office. Dramatic police defunding efforts had closed the unit permanently.
Assorted pushpins lined the empty cork surface. No one had ever cared about, or even noticed, their color. It never mattered. The notes labeling active investigations were simply organized by severity.
Outside, sporadic gunfire, now, sounded ‘day in’ and ‘day out’.

Fortune Telling

Hey! Someone must be looking over my shoulder!

Library books.

Just yesterday, I had a fortune cookie and I was thinking how lame the fortunes are! Of course, if they weren’t vague and obviously, just for fun, there would be lawsuits.

Imagine you are sitting in a restaurant alone one evening. You crack open the delightful meal-ending treat and it says, “The people at the next table suspect you of a terrible crime.”

You glance quickly around the room meeting the eye of a man in an odd green plaid blazer. He grins and nods knowingly. OH NO! He knows!

It wasn’t your fault, it happened years ago!

But, how could he know? “I was sure that I was alone!” , you whisper under your breath.

The following months are spent looking over your shoulder and loitering at the entrances of dry cleaners… watching and waiting, hoping to spot that sickening green plaid blazer. THEN, when you find it, you’ll casually look for the man’s name and address while studying the price lists on the counter. Yes, it was a great plan. You can go to his home and reason with him, plead with him! That MAN…he’s been stalking you every night in your dreams! Your eyes are swollen from the lack of sleep. The perimeter of your eye sight is fuzzy and the fact that you have not changed your clothes since that chance encounter makes you really smelly!

Suddenly you are watching your reflection waving to you below the pier. How? When? Nothing matters anymore as you smile a “grinchly” grin at your visage which returns it, then disappears as you race toward the water, head first, shouting,” The book was only two days overdue!”*

* No one was harmed in the creation of this tale. You turn out to be a professional high diver who comes to his/her senses after a refreshing “dip”, and pays the library fine by donating your time to reading for children every other Tuesday.
