Eugi’s Causerie Weekly Prompt- Tender and Lonely

Your Weekly Prompt Petals – July 29, 2021

“You are one weird dude, Akoni , but that’s why I love you so much!”

Mimi often talked to her Drosera anglica plant that she had smuggled to her home in California, as a clipping, from her trip to Hawaii 12 years ago.

“Akoni ? (Hawaiian for invaluable)
How about strip steaks tonight?”

The majestic plant seemed to shudder and made a moaning sound of approval. He had grown practically a foot per year and now filled half of her den. Akoni’s needle-like petals were the MOST beautiful sight under her black light and Mimi truly did love him.

She was a botanist and knew better than to transfer exotic plants from their native environment but she had found the carnivorous plant too intriguing, and beautiful, to resist. Her solitary, pathetically lonely, existence, as a woman with midget dwarfism, was the ‘fertile ground’ for her bizarre attachment to this particular plant but who was it harming?

“First… I need a shower, my dear. Our dinner will come after that.”

Mimi pulled on her purple slippers after she zipped up her one piece child-sized matching PJs, then cooked for the two of them. Akoni’s appetite had outmatched her own for over a year and was getting expensive, but she didn’t mind. He was all she had.

The next morning, Mimi had a lecture scheduled for 10:00 am and when she didn’t show up or call by 4 o’clock, her co-worker knocked on her door. Hearing a moaning sound, she rushed to get the superintendent who unlocked the apartment for her.

A single purple slipper hung on Akoni’s tendril branches and Mimi was nowhere, ever, to be found.

I love a well told story. If it makes me laugh, all the better.

  1. Fascinating! I’m familiar with Venus Fly Traps and Pitcher Plants (I sold them in my Floral Department) but this one! WOW!
    Excellent write! 😊

  2. Your story reminds me of the movie “The Little Shop of Horrors” and the giant man-eating plant that demands to be fed. Excellent storytelling, Susan.

    1. Thanks! Yes, as the story developed, The Little Shop of Horrors came to mind. It wasn’t a direct influence but I thought “Shucks. This story has a cousin.”. 🤣

      1. Poor Mimi though (though my first thought with the name is the Drew Carey Show, and so a little harder to sympathize….)

      2. LOL… I wanted to make her sound little but thought of the Drew Carey Show too.
The greasy make-up made her easier to swallow, I’m sure. 😀

      3. Truthfully, I only watched the show a few times, but one of the times I did, they had “Mini-Mimi”, taking off of Mini-Me from Austin Powers. That character would be about the size as the one in your story… (she was so disgusted with Mimi’s meanness that she quit)

      4. Out of curiosity, I looked it up – maybe it didn’t age well 😉 “In one storyline, after seeing Austin Powers, a little person decides that she’s going to be “Mini Mimi” and follow Mimi around the office dressed in her outlandish clothes and makeup. The whole situation, along with the cast’s remarks, is unfortunate.”

Tell me something good...
