Okay… Motown (R&B) is one of my FAVORITE genres!
I was thrilled to find the word ‘anguish’ in this awesome hit by the immortal Jackson 5.
Gloria Gaynor did it too. A double treat.
You don’t want to get me started on Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, and The Temptations.
Enjoy!
Never Can Say Goodbye. ” Never Can Say Goodbye “ is a song written by Clifton Davis and originally recorded by The Jackson 5 . The song was originally written and intended for the Supremes; however Motown decided it would be better for the Jackson 5. Released as a single in 1971, it was one of the group’s most successful records.
I never can say goodbye, no, no, no, I
I never can say goodbye
Every time I think I’ve had enough
And start heading for the door
There’s a very strange vibration
Piercing me right to the core
It says, “turn around you fool
You know you love him more and more”
Tell me why is it so
Don’t want to let you go
Hey, I never can say goodbye, boy
Ooh baby, I never can say goodbye, no, no, no, hey
I never can say goodbye, oh no, I
I never can say goodbye
I keep thinking that our problems
Soon are all gonna work out
But there’s that same unhappy feeling
And that anguish and that doubt
It’s that same old dizzy hang-up
I can’t do with you or without
Tell me why is it so
I don’t want to let you go
Hey, I never can say goodbye, boy
Ooh baby, I never can say goodbye, no, no, no, ooh
Hey, I never can say goodbye, boy
Ooh baby, I never can say goodbye, no, no, no, no, no, no
Hey, I never can say goodbye, boy
No, no, no, baby, hey, I never can say goodbye, no, no, no
Please don’t let me say goodbye
I just cannot say goodbye
Excruciating – A Unique Title For Me (wordpress.com)
This song is about one of those unhealthy relationships that never seems to work out, but also won’t end because something always pulls them back together. Michael Jackson was just 12 when he sang this. It was the first Top 40 hit for Gloria Gaynor. Great choice Susan.
Thanks. I always learn something on Song Lyric Sunday! Thanks for hosting this delightful prompt.
You are welcome and it is my pleasure. I host another music related challenge every other Friday and soon I will be taking over Thursday Inspiration.
They used to play this song at the skating rink. Good memories. Never really listed to the lyrics until today though.
I was surprised on the lyrics too. Thanks for commenting!
Good choice! An old fave song
Thanks, Christine! Cheers!
